Amherst Steele (1974-78)
Track and field
1978: Finished third at the Division I state for the 880-yard run in a time of 1:53.0 behind Hilliard’s Scott Rider (1:52.4) and Cleveland Heights’ Joel Albers (1:52.6).
1978: Finished second in the 880 (1:52.8) behind Albers’ meet-record 1:51.8 at the Kent Class AAA District. Welte’s metric-converted time of 1:52.1 remains the Lorain County record. He earlier won the Elyria Class AAA Sectional for the 880-yard run in a time of 1:54.6.
Cross country (1975-77)
1977: Team member of Class AAA state championship team. Finished as Comets’ No. 2 runner (6th overall) at the state meet in 12:16 (2.5 miles) as Amherst defeated Bay for the championship, 77-113.
1976: Team member of the Comets’ squad that placed fourth at the Class AAA state meet.
Team member of three Lakeland Conference championship teams (1975-77)
Baseball (1975-78)
1975-78: Four-year varsity player as a pitcher and second baseman.
1978: Earned All-Ohio Class AAA honorable mention and All-Lakeland Conference first team. Posted a 7-1 won-lost pitching record along with a .353 batting average. Helped lead Amherst to the sectional finals where Comets lost a one-run decision.

Four-year basketball player including varsity as a junior and a senior.

Lettered all 4 years and was a part of 4 Big Ten Championships: 1979 and 1980 indoor track, 1979 outdoor track and 1980 cross country.
Team member of 4×800 that ran 7:20 at the 1982 Drake Relays that is still No. 3 fastest time at Indiana University
