Madison Heights High School, Anderson, Indiana (Jan.-June 1968)
Track and field
1968: Best mile: 4:08 – 1st place and new Indiana high school state mile record! It was the fastest high school mile run in United States for the 1968 season! The Indiana high school state track and field finals were held May 25, 1968 at Indianapolis Tech High School. Lap splits were 61, 63, 64 and 60.
1968: Best two-mile: 8:56.4 – 1st place Golden West Invitational, Sacramento, California in June 1968. It was the fastest high school two-mile run in United States in 1968! It was the first time Indiana high school runner runs sub 9-minute two-mile. The temperature at the track was 109 degrees before meet started and cooled to 98 degrees at start of two-mile race.

Avon Lake High School (1966-1967)

Cross country
1966: Finished state runner-up in the Class AA (now Division I) state individual race at Ohio State’s Scarlet Golf Course. Columbus West’ Charles Starkey won the race as he held off Hiles, 10:29 to 10:33. It was Starkey’s second state title in three years after a second place finish in 1965.
1966: Hiles was fourth at the Parma Ridgewood Class AA Regional to qualify for state. A week earlier he won the Highland Class AA District for Section I with a time of 10:55. Hiles also finished third earlier in the season at the Ashland Distance Classic
Other distinction
1966: Member of the inaugural cross country program at Avon Lake High School, led by coach Jim Saul.

Track and field
1967: Hiles placed sixth for the two-mile in the Class AA state finals at Ohio State.
1967: He finished a close second at the Mansfield Regional to Fairview’s Sid Sink who set a meet record, 9:31.2 to 9:32.8. Hiles earlier won Elyria Class AA District for the two-mile in a meet-record 9:49.1. He was the Southwestern Conference runner-up for the mile behind Sink, 4:24.3 to 4:24.7.
Note: Hiles posted a 9:21 for two miles at a 1967 summer track meet (9:28 was the OHSAA state record at the time)
1966: Finished fourth at the Elyria Class AA Track District for the mile in 4:41. Overall, the best mile time for his sophomore year was 4:31

Road Race
Sophomore – Finished 1st place overall in a summer 10-mile road race on Lake Road in Bay Village. The race was attended by 20 members of Cleveland Road Running Club led by ‘The Swede’, whom had never been beaten by any member of the club, at any distance. Hiles followed ‘The Swede’ for 9 ¾ miles before passing him with 440 yards to go, pulling away to the finish line. Hiles time: 51:06 (5:06/mile)

Freshman. Best 880 2:14; Best mile 4:55

Indiana University (1968-72)
Track and field
Best mile: 4:05.9, second place to BGSU’s Dave Wottle at Bowling Green University in the spring of 1971, 12 months before Wottle’s Olympic gold medal triumph in 800 meters at the 1972 Munich Games. Hiles opened up 50 yards on Wottle roaring down the backstretch of last lap, but it was not enough! Wottle passed Hiles in the homestretch like he was standing still.

Cross country
Finished 7th place in NCAA regional-qualifying race held at Indiana University, 1971 and so advanced to run in NCAA XC National Championships held Van Cortland Park, New York. Hiles had a ringside seat to watch Steve Prefontaine and his Oregon teammates win the individual and team titles as they roared past him, and everyone else, into the New York sunset and glory……
